The Society

The Derbyshire Archaeological Society was founded in 1878 as an archaeological and natural history society to foster and encourage interest in the past life and natural history of the county. Though natural history has been taken over by other societies, the Society has widened its archaeological and historical work in response to new needs. There are now four sections: the Archaeological Research Group, the Architectural Section, the Industrial Archaeological Section, and the Local History Section. All run fieldwork or visits and lecture programmes in addition to the activities of the main Society.

The Society has long worked for the conservation of the more important sites and buildings in Derbyshire, and is one of the major county bodies consulted by planning authorities on matters concerning archaeological sites and historic buildings.

The Journal

The Society publishes an annual Journal covering the history and archaeology of the county. An on-line, searchable Subject Index is available.

Miscellany

The Society also publishes Derbyshire Miscellany, the bulletin of the Local History Section of the Society. Miscellany includes shorter communications such as notes and queries, as well as a wide range of articles on the county's local history. A separate annual subscription (£6.00 for members and £8.00 for non-members) is charged for Derbyshire Miscellany.

Library

The Society's Library, built up over more than a hundred years, is housed in Derby City Library in The Wardwick, Derby. The book collection is primarily works on Derbyshire but we also have a long-running and important collection of archaeological and historical journals from national, county and local societies. The Library is accessible to members through a catalogue at the Information Desk in the Central Library. Members may borrow books and journals for up to three months. General enquiries, copies of the catalogue and requests for help should be addressed to Ray Marjoram
