The Main Mill at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, built in 1797, is the first iron framed building in the world, and as such is seen as the grandparent of the skyscraper. This talk will take you through the history of the site, why it is here in Shrewsbury, who built it, and the parallels with contemporary buildings in the Derwent Valley. After 90 years as a Flaxmill and 90 years as a Maltings, the building is now being refurbished thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund Grant of £20.7m.

    This illustrated talk presents the full 200-year history of the Mansfield & Pinxton Railway, which is the oldest continuously running commercial railway in England. It will also take a glimpse into the factors that led up to its formation and hopes for the future. We will also take into consideration how it supported the local economies, especially that of Mansfield. Recently a dedicated group celebrated the railway’s amazing 200th anniversary with the help of a National Lottery Heritage Grant, which meant that they were able to immortalise this railway and its record-breaking anniversary and helped to raise its profile.

    Local Yokel has Howard Carter moment - the Elka Project was born from an accidental discovery of just two ring ditch anomalies, found in a local wood. The speaker gathered as much information as he could and submitted the information to the governing bodies of archaeology within his local council - this has now developed in to a Community Project’.
