Calke Abbey garden heating technology
Fiona Fyfe will give an introductory talk in the National Trust Learning Centre in the stable yard complex at Calke and then take us for a walk in the gardens to look at the various technologies used to heat the greenhouses and bothies. The tour will not include any visits within the house.
The garden buildings at Calke Abbey contain an exceptional range of heating systems, dating from the 1770s to the 1930s, including a rare `cockle stove’, which was originally developed by William Strutt for use in his Derwent Valley cotton mills. Fiona’s work has won two academic prizes and she has also written an interpretation plan for the National Trust, with recommendations for interpreting these historic heating systems, enabling the public to understand and engage with them.
Meet at the National Trust Learning Centre in the stable yard complex at Calke Abbey. Entry to the Calke Abbey estate is via Main Street, Ticknall, postcode DE73 7JF.
