Speaker: David Knight

This talk provides an introduction to a recently launched exhibition at the University of Nottingham Museum on the subject of Trent Valley prehistory, which includes a selection of prehistoric artefacts recovered from recent excavations in advance of quarrying in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Finds have been selected with the aim of shedding light upon the changing valley environment and the transition from hunter-gatherer to agricultural societies. It includes a variety of stone artefacts, pottery and metalwork and rare organic finds such as a wooden Iron Age shovel from Hoveringham in Nottinghamshire.

Dr David Knight is currently Head of Research at York Archaeology and an Honorary Research Fellow in the University of Nottingham’s Department of Classics and Archaeology. He has curated the exhibition with his colleagues Kristina Krawiec and Steve Malone. The exhibition is open with free admission Thursday to Sunday (12 noon to 4pm) and continues until Sunday 10 January.

During the Napoleonic Wars over 100,000 French prisoners were held in Britain at various times – some for many years.  How, for instance, were French POWs received in Ashbourne, Leek and Cambridgeshire?  Did any escape?  Did any romances occur?  Had opinions of the French changed by the end of the Napoleonic Wars? Mark answers the above questions and tells the story of the of the world’s first purpose-built POW camp, Norman Cross, and how other prisoners were received in Derbyshire and beyond.

Dr. Mark Barnard has for the past 10 years delivered history courses and talks for an adult education organisation, and also presents courses at The Mechanics Institute, Nottingham, as part of their leisure learning remit.

This free commemorative conference hosted by Ice Age Insightsfree commemorative conference hosted by Ice Age Insights celebrates Daryl’s life and work; her contributions to professional and community archaeology shaped understanding of the Late Upper Palaeolithic in the East Midlands. Her leadership in volunteer training, lithic analysis and public engagement continues to influence archaeological practice today.
