Rome was a slave society which relied on enslaved labour to maintain many aspects of its empire. This talk looks at how the institution functioned and how it differed from later slave systems. It explores how slaves were incentivised and controlled, how they could push back, and how early Christians adapted their ideas to accommodate the world in which they lived.

Dr Jerry Toner is a Roman historian at Churchill College, Cambridge, whose works looks at the Roman world from below, focussing on ordinary people and other subordinate groups.
