The Library will be open from 10.00am beforehand and following the formal business of the AGM there will be two short talks by members:

John Titterton: Is there any evidence for an Anglo-Saxon Ashbourne?  Short answer “Not a lot, But…”

Magpie Mine is one of the best-preserved lead mining sites in the country, with evidence of mining activities spanning more than three centuries. The buildings and other structures on the site demonstrate the changes in technology over time, from the days when everything had to be done by hand, through the horsepower and then steam power eras, to the use of internal combustion engines in the mid-20th century.  Members of the Peak District Mining Historical Society will lead a guided tour of the surface features of the site which will take about an hour with the opportunity to look down some of the many shafts on the site. There will also be a chance to enjoy the comforts of the Agent’s House and talk to PDMHS members about what is being done to maintain and preserve the site for future generations.

Vehicular access to Magpie Mine is from Grin Low, the Bakewell – Flagg road, about half a mile south of Sheldon, (not from the village itself.). The grid reference is SK173682 and postcode DE45 1QU. Parking is available at the roadside 5 minutes walk away, but for our visit it will also be possible to drive up the rough access track to park at the Agent’s House. Since the mine site is quite exposed at over 1000ft above sea level on the limestone plateau, the weather can be inclement, so a windproof and waterproof jacket is advisable.  Sturdy footwear is recommended, as much of the site is uneven.
