Vicky Wade from DAS local history section will lead a one mile walk around this fascinating place once the centre of a major Anglo-Norman baronetcy which held manors in Derbyshire. This walk takes in some of the history of buildings within the small market town, the grade 1 listed church and a short footpath to view the landscape close to the remains of a Norman castle.

The date has been chosen to give members the option to follow the walk with a visit to the castle on its once-a-year public opening 2.00pm to 4.30pm (£5 pay on the day).

Meet at the junction of Worksop Road and Westgate on the green sward opposite the Travellers Rest Inn (postcode DN11 9NQ) at 11.00am. The walk is easy with few gradual slopes. Free street parking is available in the vicinity and there is a car park north of the church on St Mary’s Road (DN11 9LZ).

A wide range of historical and heritage societies, groups, archives and libraries will be represented with displays of their activities and and sales of their publications. Please bring cash as many small groups are unable to accept card payments.

Refreshments will be available and some of the groups will be giving short talks.

A two-hour walk around the village of Ticknall looking at vernacular architecture but also including the chapel, tramway bridge and the history of the ruined church before finishing at the present church. The tour will be led by Janet Spavold and Sue Brown, officers of the former Ticknall Archaeological Research Group.

Meet at the Village Hall car park, Ingleby Lane, Ticknall, DE73 7JX (OS ref SK35268 24102) There is an hourly bus service from Derby to Ticknall (Derby to Swadlincote service). Accessibility: terrain is essentially flat but some pavements are narrow.
