Guided tour of Derby Cathedral

A guided tour of the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Derby.  It became a cathedral in 1927.  The original church was founded in the mid -10th century but the main body of the church, as it stands today, is a Georgian building by James Gibbs.  The tower dates from the 16th century.

  • Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

    A visit to the newly upgraded Industrial Hamlet, a site of scythe and steelmaking since the 1700s. Workers’ cottages, waterwheels, workshops, crucible furnace and tilt hammers are among the many features. The site was recognised as an important example of Sheffield’s industrial heritage as early as 1935 and opened as a museum in 1970. A recent lottery grant has refreshed the way in which the site is presented, so a return visit will be well worthwhile even if you have been before.

  • Little Chester Training Excavation

    A site tour of ‘Derventio’, Derby's own Roman fort in Little Chester, where there will be an archaeological training dig in progress. The tour will be led by Laura Parker, Community Engagement Manager of York Archaeology. Laura will give us details of the previous excavation in 2016 and then take us to the current dig.

    Meet at Chester Green Community car park DE1 3RR.

  • Laxton, a working heritage village

    Laxton in Nottinghamshire is the only remaining working ’open field’ farming village in Europe still operating this ancient system. Stuart Rose will walk us around the village and give us the history. There will also be chance to visit Laxton Visitor Centre.

    Meet at 10.30am.in the car park of the Dovecote Inn Main Street, Laxton, Nottinghamshire NG22 0SK.

    Orders will be taken for lunch if required before the tour. Or bring along a picnic.
