  • A 12th century pioneer pottery at Skegby, Nottinghamshire
    19:30 -21:00
    08/04/2022
    Darley Lane, Derby, DE1 3AX

    Speaker: David Budge

During construction of a small extension to a house in Skegby, Nottinghamshire, the builder noticed pot sherds in the side of the foundation trench and was able to rescue them before the trench was filled with concrete. What he had found proved to be evidence of a previously unknown medieval pottery industry. This talk describes the (ongoing) detective work that has gone into understanding the find itself, as well as the fieldwork and archaeological research that has since been undertaken to place the products of the industry in context. It explains why this chance discovery is significant, not just on the local scale in terms of the increased knowledge of the sources and dating of medieval pottery in west Nottinghamshire and north-east Derbyshire that it has provided, but also more widely, as the short duration of the industry provides a nationally rare opportunity to examine a medieval ‘pioneer pottery’ in its earliest stages.
